Optimizing Your Facebook Fan Pages

February 20, 2013

The optimization of Facebook fan pages has been a point of great debate on many SEO and social media blogs, as different experts argue the best ways to get your fan page noticed.  Despite the conflicting ideas, there are some basic ways that you can optimize your Facebook fan pages SEO.

Name Your Business Page

First and foremost, you need to pick the best name for your Facebook fan page.  Google puts the most importance or weight on the first word of your fan page title, so you want to make sure to pick something descriptive for your company.  Don’t get too spammy, either – while it may be tempting to include all of your key words (i.e., if you are a Coffee Shop – “Corner Coffee – Mochas, Lattes, Coffee, Muffins, etc.”) this WILL hurt you in the long run, as people may hide your updates because they view the page as all spam and not a legitimate business.

Claim a Custom URL

After you have decided on the name of your fan page, you need to create a custom fan page vanity URL, or username.  These are vital, as URLs are heavily weighted by search engines.  You should try to claim your company’s business name as the URL, and if this is, for some reason, unavailable, pick a URL that reflects an aspect of your business.  Facebook allows you to see what username options are available before you make a final decision.

Post Relevant and High-Quality Content

Consistently posting about relevant information to your industry will help customers and search engines realize that you are an authority in that industry, especially if your freshly updated content is also high quality. Including photos and videos in your content will only help you page views and help you gain a longer on-page time, which can help your social media marketing efforts as well as with search engine optimization

These are just some of the ways to optimize your Facebook page. There are also many differences between the different social media networks like Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, or Google+.
