Globalization has been, and most likely will always be, an ongoing process that eliminates borders between nations and allows interconnectedness between nations. By using hashtags, suddenly there is a platform for conversation topics and ideas surround that hashtag. This creates buzz and allows people to form opinions based on what they read and what others are saying.

These trending topics gain big momentum across the globe. Think of events such as #OccupyWallStreet, #Kony2012 or #BringBackOurGirls. It is estimated that Twitter has up to 288 million active monthly users all over the world, and they’re increasing everyday. With the brief and easy platform Twitter uses, it makes it so easy to connect with people everywhere and discuss topics that extend past our borders. Twitter is contributing, in major ways, to globalization by knocking down international barriers.
While Twitter can never solve all inequalities that exist, it can give people all across the world a voice, an extension of themselves, that can empower a movement. You never know what hashtag can suddenly jump to trending status and become a topic of discussion all across the world.
