Escape from WordPress

January 10, 2017

WordPress is one of the most popular Content Management Systems (CMS) for building websites out there today. But this doesn’t mean it’s for everyone.

For that reason, we wanted to share some of the best alternatives for building your website.

Keep in mind that each of these alternatives comes with its own set of pros and cons, and some may suit a particular type of website more than others.

Wix

Similar to SquareSpace, Wix is advertised as a simple solution to creating a website, and it is. They also offer a selection of over 500 pre-made design templates to choose from and offer drag and drop editing.

However, this still isn’t a solution that lets you introduce any wider changes to the site’s main functionality. And just like SquareSpace, Wix can take it down at any moment if they find it non-compliant with the terms of service.

If you are looking for a very basic, DIY solution for a website, it’s possible that Wix could work for you.

SMT Conversion Site®

The SMT Conversion Site® CMS was designed from the ground up to be easy to use and incorporate critical elements required for successful digital marketing.

The best part about our CMS is that it has an easy to use editor that allows people without technical experience to create or edits pages, but if you need additional features, you have the power of the Sales & Marketing Technologies web development team, which has the knowledge needed to provide new, custom features for your growing business.

It really is the perfect combination of beautiful design and powerful functionality.

SquareSpace

SquareSpace offers a great set of pre-made website designs that can accommodate many different purposes. With WordPress, finding a theme that’s a good match for your site’s purpose can often be particularly time-consuming. SquareSpace is also intuitive to use, even for beginners. It walks you through the entire site-building process, unlike with WordPress where you need to be ready to get your hands dirty.

The downside to this platform is that there’s not much you can do if you’re missing a feature that you need. If you want your website to grow alongside your business, this might not quite be the solution you’re looking for.

You also need to be aware that like with other similar solutions, if your site is hosted with Squarespace on their subdomain, you don’t have full control over the site. Squarespace can take it down should it find the site non-compliant with their guidelines.

Drupal

With close to 100,000,000 websites, Drupal is the second most popular CMS behind WordPress. It is mostly used by larger organizations that have access to professional technical resources.

It is reliable, highly secure and content can be added and managed easily. The website design can be customized with themes and functionality can be expanded with add-ons.

The down side to Drupal is that it is much more technical than WordPress. That means that if you don’t have advanced technical knowledge, you should not try to create a Drupal website. Ultimately, it is good software to build a great looking website with advanced features, but needs technical expertise to install and operate.
