As you probably know by now if you’ve been an SMT blog or podcast subscriber, content marketing is beneficial for a variety of reasons like improving search engine optimization (SEO), building an audience, and converting website visitors, but generating content ideas that will help you achieve those goals is a little more tricky. Whether you’re putting together your first content strategy or you want to ramp up your current efforts, we’ll show you several ways to generate content ideas that will attract and engage visitors.

1. Find out what content your customers like.

Learn more about your customers’ reading habits, what they watch, podcasts they subscribe to, etc. For example, if your business has a Facebook page, see what other pages your followers also follow. Have a YouTube channel? See what other channels your subscribers also watch. In addition to some internet sleuthing, you can conduct interviews, run a poll, or send out surveys to better understand what content interests your customers most.

2. Research your competitors.

Check out your competitors’ websites, blogs, social media, etc. to see how they’re using content to attract and engage their target audience. If a particular piece of content has a lot of shares or comments, then it’s a good indicator that it’s resonating with their audience. Also, using tools like SEMRush or Buzzsumo can help you get a deeper look into the performance of competitors’ website pages.

3. Browse Q&A websites or forums.

Quora, Reddit, and Yahoo Answers are chock full of people asking questions that you can use as inspiration for your own content. When people make the effort to submit a question, it shows a high level of interest in that topic. Furthermore, creating content about that question allows you to reply back to the original poster with a link to the content which can increase referral traffic.

4. Review your Google Analytics.

Google Analytics offers a variety of reports that allow you to see what search queries visitors used to land on your website, what pages they’re visiting, how long they stay on pages, and more. Not only can Google Analytics show how your current content is performing, but it can reveal gaps in your content as well. For example, the Search Terms report shows what keywords visitors are searching for on your website which can indicate that they’re not able to find relevant content when navigating your website hence why they’re using your website’s search function.

5. Have a brainstorming session.

“Two heads are better than one,” right? A brainstorming session is a great way to generate content ideas, especially if you involve team members who aren’t typically involved with content like accounting, production, IT, and customer service to gain a different perspective. When you have your brainstorming session, create an atmosphere where people feel comfortable to share their ideas. Remember, a successful brainstorm is one that generates new, unexpected ideas.
